Blogging and Making Money

Blogged under Blog News by Stan Hooker on Monday 25 February 2008 at 10:39 am

Day 1 of 31 - Blogs don’t work unless there’s content. They also don’t work unless you post that content. So I need to create a posting schedule. Choose how many times a day or week I will make posts and stick to it. This will allow a reader base to grow and create a large site to be indexed by the spiders. So I will start off small, 1 post per day. It’s not a lot but I have 2 other Blogs and 2 other businesses, so it will take some more effort on my part. So this for tip 1, make a Blogging schedule and stick to it.

BlogComplishments - Goals for Your Blog - Part 1

Blogging for the fun of it is kinda the idea. But what if you want more? What more is there? Prestige, Honor, Money….probably not. But if you want to make any kind of sense you need to set up some goals and how to accomplish them. Darren over at Problogger.net had been successful at this and has called upon the Blogging community to put in their 2 cents so here are mine.

The first thing you need is to decide what your Blog is about. You can Blog about your circumstance, opinion, experience, or interests. You don’t have to be an expert, your thoughts are yours, even if it’s not shared by the general public. You can communicate your ideas and opinions in an easy to read format accessible by all. Blogging Takes Time

Blogged under Make Cents from Blogging by Stan Hooker on Wednesday 17 May 2006 at 12:14 pm

Blogging is one of the hardest more time consuming things I can do.

First you need to be passionate about something, otherwise you can lose interest and no actually Blog anymore. Case and point, my three blogs. this one, Golf Tips and News, and Sportalker. They were started because was and have been very interested in those topics. They were also started because I had some spare time on my hands. As other tings have become more important you can see that these Blogs have been neglected.

Next you need to know how to write and interesting article. For many that may be simple. This is just like having a conversation with someone, but unfortunately we can’t help it if you are boring to begin with. So then writing becomes a chore.

Then there is all the other stuff. You need to build it, market it, oh and while you’re at it let’s use it to make some money.

You roll all of this stuff together and you have a job. If you’re single, no big deal. If you have a family they either need to be very understanding that your free time now isn’t or hope that they are occupied otherwise.

If you can get all of that you may be successful. If are not then you better be having fun. Either way, it’s still the hardest thing I’ve done. If there was only instant success that would make it all easier. But, this does take time, and if this is where you are supposed to be you may be able to make a run at it.

Quantity vs. Quality

Part 5, the last in the series - Content for Your Blog You can see part four here.

We all want to write quality posts. Post that offer good content and are written well. But if you want to earn some money then quantity is key.

If you want to rank well in the search engines you need a lot of posts.

Imagine if you had 1000’s of pages of content, 1000’s of pages that were being indexed by the search engines. A lot of topics, a lot of entries, more chances it shows up on search engines, the more visitors to you site, the more clicks on your ads, the more money you make. Regularly updated pages are considered more important than stagnant websites. (more…)

Content, Where Does it Come From?

Part 4 in a series - Content for Your Blog You can see part three here.

Writing day in and day out can be difficult just from an idea standpoint. So where do I get my ideas? A news aggregator is a great start. You can track other Blogs and news resources to find topics that peak your interest.

You can quote an article or post and give your opinion on the idea expressed. I am by no means suggesting you copy someone else’s article and put it into you post. Quote a sentence or two and give your thoughts and opinions. At the end leave a link to the article that you were referring to so people can read it for themselves. This also helps out the author by giving them that all important inbound link to their site. (more…)

Create a Series

Part 3 in a series - Content for Your Blog You can see part two here.

Creating a series like this one will give your readers a reason to come back. It allows you to have more titles and content for the search engines to read.

It also creates more pages in your site. If you’re running content based advertising scheme like I am, these post will help your advertising. More people come back more often they are more likely to click on your ads. < !—more-->

When you are creating your series, write it out in a word processing program. You will get all of you thoughts together and your series will make more sense if it’s all in front of you rather than just a series of posts. Also it is a great way to spell check, nothing looks worse than words no spelled right.

Titles That Last

Part 2 in a series - Content for Your Blog You can see part one here.

Writing content is hard and time consuming, but don’t neglect your titles. Some people write their titles first. I would ask that you consider writing titles last.

Generally you know what you want to write about, but until you get it all down you never really know where it’s going to end up when your done. By the time you complete your post that title that you wrote may not convey your post. There may be a better way to grab your reader. They may not grab your reader all the time, but they may make more sense if you wait until you complete your post.

Writing Posts and Creating Content

I’ll start a series on writing posts and creating content - Content for your Blog. Today Writing Content.

When writing a post try to get right to the point. Most people don’t care to or have the time to read a long post, unless it really grabs them. We are not writing a book, just trying to get some information across. So after you have picked your topic and wrote that attention grabbing headline, be quick to get to the point. It also will show up in a reader better.

If you want to write a long post, write the attention grabbing stuff in the first paragraph are refer your reader to the “more” link to read the rest of the article. This will also help to get more headlines on your front page and not buried in the back end of your site. (more…)

How to make Money Blogging

Blogged under Blog News, Make Cents from Blogging by Stan Hooker on Tuesday 25 October 2005 at 9:04 am

Darren Rowse over a ProBlogger has written a great post on making money from your Blogs. He writes:

I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to earn an income from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.

First you should always Blog for fun. If you don’t you will quit before it ever gets started, and getting started can take a while. If you want to earn money, that’s great. But, you need to spread yourself out a little and generate other income streams from your Blogging. Darren has a great post on the opportunities that are available. You can read his post here.
